By Amanda Dycus
Another month has gone by, another round of exciting new books has released! The options never end, and our TBR piles never get any smaller. Here’s just a few of the releases we loved last month...
A Hilarious Memoir:
The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo
by Amy Schumer
This book has already been raved about by everyone in Hollywood, and we’re sure it won’t disappoint! Schumer has taken the comedy world by storm with her unapologetic nature and in this memoir she gets even more candid. It shows a side of her people haven’t seen yet-- but, of course, that side is still just as hilarious as the rest of her.
A Magical Children’s Book:
by Cassie Beasley
Micah has been told about the fantastical Circus Mirandus for years, and one day it finally proves to be real! He embarks on an adventure to get a miracle from the circus leader that his grandfather was promised. Adults that loved The Night Circus will want their kids to experience the excitement of a magical circus for themselves, and this book is sure to do that!
A Literary Masterpiece:
Behold the Dreamers
by Imbolo Mbue
Buzzfeed has already toted this novel as an “Incredible New Book to Read this Summer” and we can’t help but agree! Mbue writes about the American Dream from the perspective of an immigrant family struggling to stay afloat during the Great Recession. It’s a story of perseverance, marriage, class systems, and what achieving the “Dream” really entails-- definitely a book to make you think!
A Rollicking Thriller:
Right Behind You
by Lisa Gardner
Sharlah May Nash’s older brother saved her years ago by beating their drunken father to death, but in the present day he’s killing again, and he’s no hero. Sharlah must come to terms with who her brother truly is, what really happened back then, and how this information will change her future… Gardner, author of Find Her, is skilled in the art of suspense; this mystery will no doubt become another best-seller!
A Poignant YA Pick:
I Crawl Through It
by A.S. King
King is a master at understanding teenage emotions, and her latest book about the immense pressure they face is going to be brilliant. It will also surely be heartfelt, heartbreaking, and beautifully written-- like all her books! Magical surrealism is abundant as a group of teens try their hardest to make it through life by escaping it, until they realize their best option is to give it their all. Prepare your tear ducts.
A Sophisticated Debut:
by Gayle Forman
Forman is the author of many young adult novels, including the immensely popular If I Stay and Where She Went; this book marks her first foray into adult literature. The protagonist, Maribeth Klein, is so overworked-- she doesn’t even notice when she has a heart attack! Afterward, she decides to heal- both emotionally and physically- by running away from her life. This is such an intriguing idea, because how many of us have wanted to forego our responsibilities? We cannot wait to see how this book turns out!
